How To: Malygos (10)

Here it is! My first 10-man raid guide for healers. Why would I do such a thing? Well...there are plenty of guides out there to kill Malygos, but few of them focus on the healing aspect and strategies of the raid. This guide is mostly intended for main tank restoration druid healers, but [insert class name here] could probably find it equally useful. Why start with Malygos? He's my favorite boss to heal in the current Wrath line up.

Stat Recommendations (Raid Buffed):
Health: 18k+
Healing: 1900+
Spirit: 900
MP5: 350

Give or take on those. As a rule of thumb so long as you've collected a few upgrades from Naxx along with the heroics/badge items you should be all right.

Phase One:

Don't worry about running straight in to Malygos's platform, he will not engage until you use the Key to the Focusing Iris obtained by slaying Sapphrion in normal difficulty. You did remember to bring someone who has the item, right? Anyway... here are the abilities to watch out for:

Arcane Breath: Deals 18,850 to 21,150 to anyone standing in front of him. This leaves a non-dispellable debuff which will cause another 9,425 to 10,750 after 5 seconds.

Arcane Storm: Malygos will turn to a member of the party for a split second and cast two arcane missiles, one at his target then another at a random party member which deals about 9,425 to 10,750.

Vortex: Malygos flies off and lifts the entire raid into a stream of air for 10 seconds. During this time, the all members will take 2,000 damage every second. After this has occurred, the raid will plummet back to the ground and take 10% of their health in falling damage.

This part is pretty simple as far as healing is concerned. Start throwing out HoTs as soon as the tank has established aggro on Malygos. Depending on your healing style: if you have your 4T7 I would suggest throwing out Nourishes to help mana conservation instead of spamming Regrowth. Swiftmend if/when necessary and keep rolling those hots until Vortex. Your healing partner should be able to cover the damage dealt to the raid up until this point and even throw a few heals on the tank to help out.

When Malygos prepares to cast Vortex (you'll notice him disengage from the tank and fly towards the center of the platform) start casting hots on as many raid members as possible. You're about to be lifted off of the platform and as I've noticed you won't be able to cast hots for a moment until you're into "position". For the duration of the vortex effect only instant spells can be cast and anything with a cast timer of .5 or longer gets interrupted. The reason to precast what hots you can is because there is a good chance 1-2 members of your group will be out of your healing range. When everyone has hit the ground again cast a Wild Growth to help top the raid off then get back to rolling heals on your tank.

Rinse and repeat this until Malygos reaches 50%. This is signaled by him saying: "I had hoped to end your lives quickly, but you have proven more...resilient then I had anticipated. Nonetheless, your efforts are in vain, it is you reckless, careless mortals who are to blame for this war! I do what I must...And if it means your...extinction...THEN SO BE IT"

Phase Two:

Arcane Storm: Malygos will turn to a member of the party for a split second and cast two arcane missiles, one at his target then another at a random party member which deals about 9,425 to 10,750.

Deep Breath: After a minute or so Malygos will emote and hit the platform with an arcane-based breath attack dealing 5,000 damage per second for 5 seconds. Anyone not on the platform will not be hit with this attack.

In this phase, Malygos is no longer your raids' target. Instead they must kill his Scions who fly overhead. However there is a 30 second window before the Scions appear and he is flying off to damage him. Depending on how your
mana is looking you have two options.

A: DPS Malygos as much as possible to make phase 3 a little faster.
B: Stay out of combat and let your mana recharge.

That decision is up to you.

Even though he Malygos cannot be targeted he will continue to pelt two members of your raid with the Arcane Storm. The Scions themselves will also cast their own spells on to various raid members. To help minimize the damage taken there are spheres that will be cast onto the platform every couple of seconds. Make sure that you and your group are under these as much as possible. They dwindle to nothing after a time so it is important to keep your eyes open for new spheres that have been cast. If a sphere happens to be placed where you are standing, you will be thrown back a few yards and take some minor damage.

Use every trick in your book to keep the raid healed during this period. You may be forced to heal on the run (but that's what we're good at) so keep your fingers at the ready for a Rejuvenation/Swiftmend combo to any member hit running from bubble to bubble. During the Deep Breath cast a Wild Growth and do what you can to keep everyone up. Don't worry about ooming towards the end of this part because you won't be using your mana for the next.

This phase will end after all of the Scions have been killed.

Phase Three:

Arcane Pulse: Anyone within 30 yards of Malygos' hit box will be subjected to very high amounts of damage.

Static Field: An AoE cone that spans 30 yards targeted on one raid member's location.

Surge of Power: Targets a random raid members' drake and causes it to take approximately 1/5 of its health for 5 s
econds.

At the beginning of this phase Malygos will crack the platform under your feet. Fear not! The red dragon flight will be r
eady to save you from falling to your death. From now until either boss death or enrage you will have control over the
dragon and use its' abilities. Here are the ones you should keep in mind:

Revivify: A HoT that heals 500 damage per second for 10 seconds. It costs 10 energy and awards one combo point.

Life Burst: A healing AoE finishing move that increases the healing done by 50% and lasts longer per combo point. Max combo points award a 15k heal to all friendly targets within 60 yards for 25 seconds. Costs 50 energy.

Flame Shield: Finishing move that creates a barrier to protect you against Surge of Power. Uses all available combo points. Costs 25 energy.

There is about a 30 second window from when you land on your drake until Malygos resumes his attack. Use this time to gather the raid in one location. My group normally flys behind him and up around eye level with his head. While the raid cannot attack him until he spins around to face you you have the ability to precast your drakes' hots. Make sure you have a drake targeted as your actual party members will not be hit by attacks. My recommendation would be to keep your own drake targeted, use Revivify up to 5 combo points and then Life Burst for maximum effect.

Every few seconds Malygos will cast his Static Field ability towards the raid. Your raid leader should have a direction for everyone to move to in this event, strafe in that direction and keep the hots/AoE burst ticking on yourself. If you're to be targeted by Surge of Power you will have a 3 second window to cast Flame Shield on yourself before you start taking damage. So make sure you always have 25 energy available at all times.

When first learning how to use the drakes you may want to use two healers, but this part of the fight only requires one dedicated healer.

Strafe, heal, and Flame Shield (if necessary) and you're golden.

A note about stacking combo points:

Much like when doing the DPS kitty thing if you attack one target and they recieve two combo points then you move over to another target and attack them the combo points from your first target will have dropped off. Since combos are awarded to the drake currently targeted you'll need to stay on that drake in order to use either Flame Shield or Life Burst. In other words, if you're healing only heal yourself or if you're dpsing don't attempt to target yourself before casting Flame Shield.

That's it! With any luck this little guide has given you more insight to the Malygos fight. One last thing to remember: You only have 10 minutes to get Malygos from phase one to dead. After that 10 minutes he will enrage and deal 1000% damage to any raid member still standing. For a more visual representation I'll direct you over to Ciderhelm and his awesome video guide over at

Did this fight blind last night, didn't go well. This guide really help me know what to expect. The group I was with said that both healers should heal "everyone". What do you think of that? Shouldn't there really just be a tank healer and a raid healer for the first phase?
